5 Reason Why I am Using Ubuntu Linux

My first Linux is Redhat 6.2 which given to me by my friend. The CD of Redhat Linux make me curious and want to know how to install the Redhat Linux on the desktop computer. But, my expectation too high and make me desperate when install finish. I just got shell login. No image or anything just blank display with username and password to login. Than, I got other Redhat Linux CD when buy a book Linux tutorial. The Redhat Linux that I receive belong the book is Redhat Linux 9.

Just like before, I installed on desktop computer and get good impression. I have new display window manager then I learn about Linux including install other distro of Linux also try to set-up the server to serve the windows client.

After several trial and error with many distro Linux. I try for the first time Ubuntu Linux 5.04 when launch to the Internet, I feel Ubuntu Linux has different taste, good support and huge community. And now, 3 years already Ubuntu has become my major distro Linux that install on laptop, desktop and server.

5 Reason Why I am Using Ubuntu Linux

And now, I want to share the reason why I am using Ubuntu Linux.
1. Ubuntu is free
Ubuntu is free, You could download the enterprise Operating System with one click. Also you could ask them to send you a free Ubuntu Linux CD with great cover on the top of CD as personal collection.

2. Easy to upgrade
Good Software has good upgrade system. The Ubuntu Linux since their first release always improve the method of upgrade. Before, upgrade to higher release of Ubuntu is pain activity. The hardware that support on previous release did not support on higher release, need some hack activity to make the hardware could work on the recent release. For newbie like me, it is painful.
But now, on the intrepid Ibex all pain was disappear. No painful activity, all active by click next and next. Just sit and relax. But if you need to do some hacking activity to fit with your computer, It’s mean you are upgrade to next level of Linux user. :)

3. Huge support from community
Support is important. The Ubuntu Linux has the huge support from the community. You could get the community support through mailing list or forum. Or if you have budget, you could ask the canonical for support. I think canonical will give you affordable price for the support.

4. Local Mirroring
Ubuntu has huge user and I need the local mirroring to save my bandwidth internet. It could be happen if ubuntu has local mirror. For me in Indonesia, It is so easy and mirror already available in many server. That I need is just track down them to get nearest server mirror location. For speedy user like me, I always set my repository list to here. Choose the correct one with fit the current Ubuntu Linux that you use.

5. Easy to use
Now, desktop Linux has great capability. Not like 10 years a go, The Linux already changes and has great improvement to use on desktop computer. Many features has advance improvement like 3D desktop Compiz Fushion or other great tool for website developer or design/image editing. And the great news for all of that is Free, no cost.

I know so many distro Linux outside. Many distro Linux with great enhancement and easy to install but until now Ubuntu Linux is my main distro Linux. How about you?, do you prefer to use other distro Linux?, or you have other experience with The Great Ubuntu Linux.

US300 is expensive if you personal user but no for enterprise. Support needed if you need custom requirement that did not cover by ordinary ubuntu release.
