5 Things to Do Before Upgrade to Ubuntu Linux Intrepid

I have planned to upgrade my Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron to Ubuntu Linux Intrepid Ibex. But before I do upgrade activity, I need to do some activities to ensure upgrade activity will smooth and all data in my laptop secure.

The worst case scenario is clean install the acer aspire laptop with Ubuntu Linux Intrepid Ibex. Thean set-up the laptop with new Ubuntu to fit with my needs and make sure all hardware on the laptop working properly like before. So, let’s make a short list before upgrade the ubuntu.

1. Back-up data
Data is important. All data in my laptop have been collected many months and take hundreds hours download from internet. I’ll back-up data to other media such as portable harddisk, CD-R/DVD-R and /or USB flash disk. If not enough, I will transfer temporary to Linux Samba server as my data warehouse.

2. Back-up Bookmark of Firefox
I Love Firefox even Google already launch Google Chrome Browser. But for now, Firefox is the best, Firefox is my best friend to surf the web and protect my privacy during connected to Internet. I have bookmark many blogs, websites that useful for me. First, I need to know how to back-up Firefox bookmark. Let me ask Google to find the answer.

3. Back-up email on Evolution
Backing up email on evolution is easy. All email, rule and contact could be back-up by copying all file under /home/user/.evolution

4. Download ISO Image (Alternate version)
We could upgrade the Ubuntu Linux via online or with the ISO image. The ISO image for upgrading purpose is alternate version. The tutorial to upgrade the Ubuntu Linux already available in here, or you could read the tutorial below for the shorter way.

Upgrading Using the Alternate CD/DVD

Use this method if the system being upgraded is not connected to the Internet.

1. Download the alternate installation CD
2. Burn the ISO to a CD and insert it into the CD-ROM drive of the computer to be upgraded.
*If the ISO file is on the computer to be upgraded, you could avoid wasting a CD by mounting the ISO as a drive with a command like:

sudo mount -o loop ~/Desktop/ubuntu-8.10-alternate-i386.iso /media/cdrom0

3. A dialog will be displayed offering you the opportunity to upgrade using that CD.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

If the upgrade dialog is not displayed for any reason, you may also run the following command using Alt+F2:

gksu “sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade”

Or in Kubuntu run the following command using Alt+F2:

kdesudo “sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade”

5. Download ISO image for desktop version
If upgrade with alternate image version unsuccessful, we could use desktop version to clean install. So, for alternative solution we need to download it and burn ii to CD.

5 things above must be to do before upgrade the Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron to Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex. I will do sequent all things above and hope no problem encountered. How about you?
