Acer Join Open Handset Alliance to Launch Android Phone

Acer announced it has signed the Open Handset Alliance and launch a smartphone based on Android by the end of the year.

Google open source mobile platform has been supported by many industry players and Open Handset Alliance now has more than 40 members including mobile operators, phone manufacturers, software, semiconductors and businesses.

Although progress in development has been slow, with only two Android devices now available and several others to follow in the coming months, the operating system is starting to gain traction

android logoThis has been fueled by the recent release of the Android 1.5 platform, also known as Cupcake, and the launch of the second competition for developers of Google Android.

Acer recently joined the mobile market following the acquisition of E-Ten in 2008 with the launch of four new smartphones based on Windows Mobile.

No other information on the Acer Android-based device are not yet available, but more information should be provided shortly.

  1. Acer has certainly become more innovative in the past year. From my opinion they have started to make better quality laptops than in past years. This expansion into the mobile phone market is a good move and I cannot wait to see the device they release later this year.

  3. Cindy, I’m agree with you. My previous laptop is Acer Aspire 3684 series and I’m happy with it. Hopefully, Acer did not follow Asus step to against Linux. :)
