Happy birthday Atom, The Intel’s smallest and lowest power processor², the Intel® Atom™ processor enables the latest Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs), and another new category of devices for the internet called netbooks and nettops. The Atom is the most revolutionary CPU which ever come from Intel. With Atom CPU, the vendor could improve the laptop more smaller, more lighter and more powerful.
Many vendor use the Atom CPU on their product. And many user love them and switch their choices to the light laptop which now we call as Netbook. In 2009, some vendor already prepare new product to release to the market. So, we as the user has many option to choose the correct one and fit with the budget.
Atom has been 1 year and Intel always do improvement to upgrade the performance and capability. Now, Intel has new model for Atom. Not only one model, they have 2 model which showed off the new Z550 and Z515 models. The Z550 extends performance to 2GHz with Intel Hyper-Threading support, while the Z515 features new Burst Performance Technology that lets the processor run at 1.2GHz when needed.
The new Atom-based Moorestown MID platform was shown in a side-by-side comparison with current Atom-based systems, demonstrating a greater than 10x idle power reduction.
Intel said that this is down to new power management tools and techniques. Moorestown comprises a system-on-a-chip, in this case called Lincroft, that incorporates a 45nm Atom processor core, graphics, video and memory controller, and a companion input/output hub codenamed Langwell.
Atom is new and sure already supported with windows Operating System such as Windows XP. Actually, I don’t have the netbook with Atom CPU inside. I just borrow from my friend to feel the experience and how Atom handle the task which I do daily. I try the Acer Aspire One and overall result is great. The Acer Aspire One is most popular netbook right now. The Acer Aspire One was preloaded with Windows XP and I’m still try to find out how the Linux could run on it.
Anyway, Happy birthday Atom and Do More!

if Ubuntu 8.10 could not make you happy. Just wait with jaunty, most probably jaunty has many support for latest HW instead of laptop. For my last 3680 acer laptop, I’m not sure the resolution, but it works with Intel driver. For my CQ40, it runs with 1280×800. May I know, what brand and model of ur laptop?
my lappy is acer aspire 5583 T5500 core 2 duo RAM 2.5gb HDD 80GB, GMA 950 with no webcam. i think the spec are the same with your late acer with difference in cpu and wireless (intel pro wireless). btw, do you ever use dialup modem in ubuntu?
