Intel Releases Moblin 2.0 Beta for Netbooks
Intel has released a beta version of its Linux-based Moblin 2.0 operating system designed for netBooks and nettops.
The latest version is part of a partnership with Novell, and is optimized for use with the Intel Atom. Developers can test the interface, as well as video.
“We invite and encourage all developers to test the beta. We believe that the code has reached a level where developers and hobbyists can play with him,” said Imad Sousou, Director of Intel Open Source Technology Center, in a blog.
Sousou said that this is a beta version, and there are still some rough edges and performance problems to be eliminated, many of which are addressed in the next week.
“We encourage everyone to test and give their opinion via Bugzilla or the mailing list of developers. Only with your feedback, we can further improve the user experience, “he said.
The interface was built from scratch using the Clutter Animation Framework. The toolbar and panels at the top of the screen are designed for easy access to the Internet through a Mozilla browser, as well as social networks, synchronization of calendars, tasks, appointments, and media content.
The Moblin 2.0 beta should work on any Intel-based netbook or nettop, Intel and developers have tested the Acer Aspire One, Asus Eee PC 901 and 1000h, Dell Mini 9, MSI Wind, Lenovo S10, Samsung NC10 and the HP Mini 1010 and 1120NR.
So, Intel has decided to create a Linux based OS. I wonder how well it will match up against Ubuntu which is currently may favorite version.
