Free is better. Nokia has been proved it on their product that we call Nokia Maps. Nokia maps or Ovi Maps has been release free download by Nokia and since then reach hugely popular on Internet. And the firm recording over a million downloads only on past week.

The Ovi Maps application has been launched for free since 21 January 2010, and since that already hit total download 1.4 million times, it’s mean one download every second.

Anssi Vanjoki, executive vice president at Nokia, said “The number of people now using their Nokia for navigation, and as a result looking for more location-aware software, is growing faster than even we predicted,”

He described the move as a “game changer” for the industry, claiming that demand had more than their expectations.

Nokia, according to Vanjoki, had used its investment in map maker Navteq to remove the costs associated with navigation, and to create a large user base to which it can offer new location features, content and services.

“This is great news for our third-party application developers as there is now an installed base of more than one million users all looking for new and innovative location-aware apps,” he said.

Ovi Maps as free application which offering products such as mobile maps, navigation and location-based services has been launch by Nokia is part of Nokia’s strategy to boost their position as the number one handset manufacturer. As we know, nowadays many vendor such as RIM, Apple even Google launch their phones to public -and no doubt, Microsoft’s Zune phone will release too by Microsoft-

However, with this Nokia’s strategy, will hit dedicated sat-nav companies such as TomTom and Garmin, both of them has been cut price their product to compete with Nokia Ovi maps.

And now, Ovi Maps will include in all new Nokia GPS-enabled smartphones, offering local country map data, high-end walk and drive navigation and access to Lonely Planet and Michelin travel guides.
